About
About ProtectYour.com
ProtectYour.com publishes plain-English guides to protecting yourself online: your identity, passwords, devices, privacy, email, home network, kids and small business. It is written for people who want to know what to do, in what order, without being frightened into buying something.
Who we are
Guides are written and maintained by the editors of ProtectYour.com. The site is part of Silicon Valley Ventures (SVV), a group of independent reference sites that each cover one subject in depth.
What we believe about security advice
- Free steps come first. A credit freeze, two-factor sign-in, a password manager and automatic updates stop most of what goes wrong. Every guide puts the free fix ahead of any product.
- No scare tactics. No countdown timers, no flashing warnings, no “your device is at risk” pop-ups. If something is a real risk we say how likely it is and what it takes to fix.
- Competitors are named fairly. We earn from some products and not from others. Where a product we do not earn from is the better choice, the guide says so.
- We say what we know and how. Our guides draw on vendors’ published documentation, independent security audits, independent antivirus lab results and government guidance from the FTC, FBI, CISA and IRS. We do not run our own lab tests and we never imply that we have.
How we make money
Some links are affiliate links: when you sign up through them, the company may pay us a commission. That pays for the site. It does not buy a recommendation, and no company reviews a guide before it is published. The full arrangement, partner by partner, is on how we make money.
Corrections and contact
If something in a guide is wrong or out of date, tell us through the contact form and we will fix it. See our editorial policy for how guides are written and updated.
