Key takeaways

  • Search for your record on BeenVerified's opt-out page (linked as Opt Out in the site footer), select it, and click the link in the verification email.
  • No membership, payment or ID is needed. BeenVerified says the change usually takes effect within 24 hours.
  • The online tool removes only one record per person. For duplicates, BeenVerified asks you to contact its privacy team.
  • People Search is separate from BeenVerified's property and contact searches. Those have their own section on the opt-out page.

How BeenVerified's opt-out works

BeenVerified's opt-out is a search tool of its own. Instead of pasting a profile URL, you search its database from the opt-out page, pick the record that is you, and confirm by email. In BeenVerified's words: search, select the record, then confirm by clicking the link in the verification email, after which it sends a second email confirming the record has been opted out.

  1. Open the opt-out page. The Opt Out link in BeenVerified's footer goes to beenverified.com/svc/optout/search/optouts. The page is headed "Looking To Opt-Out of Our People Search?"
  2. Enter your first and last name and choose your state (or All) and search.
  3. Find the record that matches you and select it.
  4. Enter an email address for the verification message.
  5. Open the email and click the verification link.
  6. Wait for the second email confirming the record was opted out.

The page sits behind a bot check, so it may show "Performing security verification" for a few seconds before the search form appears. That is normal.

Free step

BeenVerified states that you do not have to be a member to opt out and that you never have to pay to remove your own record. Its opt-out FAQ also says the email you submit is used only to verify the request and will not be sold. Using an email alias anyway costs nothing.

How long it takes and how to check

BeenVerified says that once you get its confirmation email, the opt-out shows in People Search results the next time its servers refresh. In most cases that takes about 24 hours. To check, search your name again in the opt-out search after a day. If the record still appears, BeenVerified suggests clearing your browser history in case your computer is showing a cached copy.

Search engines are a separate cache. If an old BeenVerified result for your name still appears in Google after the page itself is gone, use Google's Remove outdated content tool, or Results about you for results that show your phone number or home address.

The catch: one record per person online

This is where BeenVerified differs from Spokeo and Whitepages. Its FAQ says that, to prevent fraud, the online process only lets you remove one record from People Search. It also explains why you may have more than one: a new record with a different spelling, initials or address may not match your existing one, so it becomes a separate entry.

If you find more than one record about you:

  • Use the online tool for the record with the most current details.
  • Note the details that identify the others (the name spelling, age and cities shown) and contact BeenVerified's privacy team, as its FAQ asks. The contact address is on the opt-out page.
  • Give only what is needed to match the records. You should not need to send ID to remove a record you can point to.

The same FAQ says a data partner may later send a new record that cannot be matched to your opted-out one, so it can appear as a fresh listing. If that happens after you have opted out, BeenVerified asks you to contact the privacy team rather than reuse the online tool.

People Search is not the only search

The opt-out page covers People Search. Lower on the same page is a separate heading, "Looking To Opt-Out of Our Property Search or Contact Search?", for those searches. BeenVerified also warns that after you opt out of People Search, your name may still appear in results from its other search services, such as a reverse phone or address lookup.

So after the main opt-out, try a reverse lookup of your own phone number and home address on BeenVerified and see what comes back. If your name is still attached, use the property and contact search section of the opt-out page, or contact the privacy team.

If you live in a state with a privacy law

BeenVerified's privacy policy lists a web request form, email, phone and post as ways to exercise opt-out, access or deletion rights, and says residents of 14 states (including Colorado, Connecticut, Texas and Virginia) can appeal a refused request. Those rights mainly cover data BeenVerified holds about you as a visitor or customer; the policy treats public-records data separately but says it has honoured opt-outs of that data for years.

California residents have a stronger option: the state's free DROP platform sends one deletion request to every data broker registered with the state. Since August 1, 2026, registered brokers must check it at least every 45 days.

After BeenVerified

Clearing one site moves the problem rather than solving it, because the same records are sold to many brokers. Do Spokeo, Whitepages, the PeopleConnect brands and TruePeopleSearch in the same sitting, and set a reminder to search again in three or four months. Our data broker removal guide has the full routine.
