Key takeaways

  • Go to familytreenow.com/optout, enter your first and last name and an email address, and tick the box authorizing emails about the request.
  • Click the verification link within 24 hours, then complete the detailed opt-out form it opens.
  • FamilyTreeNow says the process is free and your information is removed within 3 days.
  • Because the site is built around family trees, check your relatives' records too: they can list you by name.

Why FamilyTreeNow is different from other people-search sites

FamilyTreeNow looks like a genealogy site, with family-tree building and historical records, but its free search also covers living people, with details such as ages, past addresses and lists of possible relatives. The relatives list is what makes it useful to anyone trying to reach you through family, and to scammers building a convincing story about a grandchild or a cousin.

That family structure also means one opt-out is rarely the end. Your name can appear on a parent’s or sibling’s record as a relative even after your own record is gone.

Step 1: start the privacy request

As of October 2026, FamilyTreeNow’s opt-out page describes this process:

  1. Open familytreenow.com/optout (titled Privacy Request).
  2. Choose whether you are the person whose information is being opted out or an authorized agent.
  3. Enter your first and last name (middle name optional) and an email address, tick the box authorizing communications about the request, and press Begin Privacy Request.
  4. Open the verification email and click the link. FamilyTreeNow says to check your spam folder and that the link expires in 24 hours.
  5. Complete the detailed opt-out form. The site says you will need to provide additional information for verification at this step, so have your current and recent addresses to hand.

FamilyTreeNow says the process is completely free and that your information will be removed within 3 days.

Free step

Find your record first with a normal search, so you can match its details on the second form. Use an email alias for the verification link.

Step 2: deal with your relatives' records

After three days, search for yourself again, then search for your parents, siblings and adult children. If you appear by name on their records, the cleanest fix is for each of them to opt out their own record, which takes your name off it as a listed relative. An authorized agent request is also possible if a relative wants you to handle it for them and gives you permission.

This matters most for older relatives. Family details from sites like this one are the raw material for the “grandparent” impersonation calls covered in our guide to imposter scams.

Other sites with the same kind of form

The two-step pattern here (name and email, a 24-hour verification link, a matching form, removal in about 3 days) is close to the one on FastPeopleSearch, USPhonebook and SearchPeopleFree. Each one is still a separate request. Our data broker opt-out list has them all in one table.
